Imran Khan Arrested in GHQ Attack Case Amid Ongoing Legal Battles
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan faced another setback as he was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attack on the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawalpindi that occurred on May 9 the previous year. Khan, who was about to be released in a cipher case, was taken into custody by authorities in the GHQ attack case.
An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi had summoned Khan for hearings related to the May 9 riots, although he participated via video link due to security concerns preventing his physical presence. The court heard about 12 cases linked to the May 9 incidents involving Khan and others.
During the proceedings, the police chief stated that Khan was apprehended in the GHQ attack case where he was named. The police requested Khan’s physical remand, which was denied by the judge, instructing the police to conduct the probe at the jail.
Despite having release orders issued in the cipher case, Khan remains in custody due to his arrest in the Toshakhana and Al-Qadir Trust scandal, amounting to 190 million pounds.
The violent protests on May 9, 2023, erupted following Khan’s arrest in a corruption case by paramilitary Rangers in Islamabad, leading to extensive damage to over 20 military installations and state buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi.
Since being removed from power in April 2022 and after the May 9 violence, Khan and his party leaders have faced multiple legal challenges. Allegations linking him to the violence have been made by opponents, a charge he has denied. Initially sentenced to three years in jail in the Toshakhana case in August 2022, his sentence was later suspended but was then arrested in the cipher case, leading to his continued detainment in Adiala jail.
