Bangladesh Court Grants Bail to Monk Chinmoy Das in One Case, Remains in Custody
CHITTAGONG, Apr 17 (VoM News): A court in Bangladesh has granted bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in one case, though he continues to remain in custody due to multiple other cases pending against him.
The order was issued on Thursday by Judicial Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain in Chattogram following a hearing.
According to his counsel Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, the case in which bail was granted was filed by former minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and involved allegations of land grabbing, intimidation and assault in the Mekhal area of Hathazari. The case, registered in 2023, names six accused, including Das.
Despite securing bail in this matter, Das remains behind bars as he faces six additional cases, including one linked to the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam.
The murder case stems from violent clashes on November 26, 2024, during protests related to Das’s earlier bail in a sedition case. Saiful Islam was allegedly attacked and killed during the incident. Subsequently, his father filed a complaint naming 31 accused.
Police later submitted a charge sheet, alleging that the killing was carried out following incitement linked to Das. On August 25, the court accepted the charge sheet against 39 accused, including the monk. The trial in the case is currently underway, with witness testimonies being recorded.
Authorities have also registered cases related to attacks on police, obstruction of government duties, assaults on lawyers and litigants, and use of explosives during the clashes.
The developments come amid heightened scrutiny over law and order and communal sensitivities in parts of Bangladesh.
