Jaishankar Advocates Realistic Approach in India-China Relations Amidst Standoff

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of approaching China through a lens of realism, advocating for a pragmatic and realistic strategy in bilateral relations during an interview with ANI. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pragmatic stance towards China and criticized the past approach under Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure.

Highlighting the government’s readiness to implement Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules, Jaishankar underlined the need for realism in dealing with China, tracing it back to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s ideology through to Narendra Modi. He emphasized the contrast in viewpoints between Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru regarding China, specifically referencing historical debates over China’s entry into the UN Security Council.

Addressing the current India-China standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Jaishankar stressed the importance of restoring normalcy on the LAC for bilateral relationship normalization. He indicated that India’s approach to China revolves around mutual respect, sensitivity, and shared interests.

Jaishankar also criticized elements that he claimed projected an assertive India and alleged democratic decline in the country, attributing such narratives to external interests aiming to push a certain agenda. He highlighted India’s initiatives to bolster relations with countries in West Asia, signaling the government’s efforts to revamp India’s diplomatic engagements.

The minister also touched upon India’s relations with Russia, asserting their importance and steadiness. He affirmed India’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating dialogue and diplomacy for resolution. Jaishankar reiterated India’s strong stance against cross-border terrorism, asserting that the country won’t entertain any dialogue with Pakistan that legitimizes the practice of terrorism.

He also highlighted India’s significant role during its G20 presidency, citing the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration and emphasizing the country’s growing global influence and visibility over the past decade.
