Heart Attacks Double During Winter, Younger Individuals at High Risk, Warn Experts
Cold weather indeed poses health risks, especially for individuals susceptible to various medical conditions. Dr. Balbir Singh, Chairman and Head of Cardiology at Max Hospitals, highlighted the significant impact of winter on health, particularly on heart-related issues.
He noted a considerable rise in heart attack cases during the winter months compared to previous periods, emphasizing the stress cold weather imposes on the heart. Dr. Singh highlighted that the hospital witnessed a doubling of heart attack cases on a daily basis compared to the preceding months.
Addressing a common misconception that only older individuals are prone to cardiac problems, he stressed that even younger people are increasingly experiencing heart-related issues. He cited an incident of treating a 26-year-old woman who suffered a heart attack, emphasizing the need for awareness among younger demographics regarding potential risks.
Explaining the physiological effects of winter on the cardiovascular system, Dr. Singh highlighted how blood vessels constrict in cold temperatures to conserve heat, leading to increased heart rate and blood pressure. He underscored the correlation between elevated nighttime heart rates and heightened cardiovascular mortality, emphasizing the importance of monitoring heart health, especially in colder months.
Additionally, Dr. Singh pointed out dehydration as a factor in winter due to reduced water intake, leading to increased blood viscosity and higher clot formation risks. He also attributed rising air pollution during winter as a contributing factor to these health concerns.
Furthermore, he mentioned lifestyle factors such as smoking, lack of physical activity, overeating, bingeing, and alcohol consumption as contributors to heart-related problems, urging individuals to pay attention to their habits to mitigate risks, especially during colder seasons.
