Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s Nomination Papers Rejected Over Unpaid Rest House Bill
The Awami Muslim League (AML) chief, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, faced rejection of his nomination papers due to an unsettled bill for a rest house owned by the Muree Forest Department, as reported by The News International. The returning officer (RO) cited the unpaid bill as one of the reasons for rejecting the AML leader’s nomination papers.
Reportedly, Sheikh Rashid stayed at the rest house between September 4 to September 9, 2022, accumulating an outstanding bill amounting to Pakistan Rupee (PKR) 322,000, which remains unpaid to the government.
Several objections were raised by the RO regarding Sheikh Rashid and his nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafiq’s nomination papers. Notably, Sheikh Rashid failed to provide comprehensive asset details and his asset value declaration did not align with his investments. Furthermore, he omitted disclosing income for the years 2021 to 2023. Additionally, an objection was raised against his land acquisition in Mouza Sial, which was not declared in the returns.
Similarly, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, the politician’s nephew, encountered objections for not submitting his wife’s tax returns and failing to furnish complete asset details.
The rejection of nomination papers extended beyond Sheikh Rashid and his nephew, encompassing leaders from various parties. Notably, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suffered setbacks as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected the nominations of incarcerated founder Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mohammad Atif Khan, Naeem Haider Panjotha, and Hammad Azhar in various constituencies.
This spate of rejections has prompted the PTI to announce its intention to contest the decisions by appealing to the Supreme Court, seeking reconsideration of the ECP’s refusal to accept the nomination papers of its prominent members.
