North Korea Plans to Launch Three More Spy Satellites in 2024, Vows Nuclear Arsenal Boost
According to Yonhap news agency, citing the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has disclosed plans to launch three additional spy satellites next year, following the successful deployment of the country’s initial military reconnaissance satellite recently.
During the plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Kim Jong-un emphasized the goal of launching these three spy satellites in 2024, building upon the success of the first satellite launched in 2023. KCNA reported discussions on bolstering space science technology to achieve this objective.
North Korea recently placed its military spy satellite, Malligyong-1, into orbit on November 21 after two previous failed attempts earlier in the year. Reports suggest suspicions of technical assistance from Russia, potentially tied to Moscow’s arms supplies amid the Ukraine conflict.
Kim Jong-un prioritized enhancing the country’s nuclear arsenal for the upcoming year, emphasizing the need for swift response capabilities to a possible nuclear crisis. Additionally, he directed the Navy to augment its military capacities and emphasized the development of unmanned armed aerial vehicles and electronic warfare means for key defense projects.
Regarding inter-Korean relations, Kim Jong-un indicated a shift, stating that South Korea would no longer be considered a counterpart for reconciliation and unification. The Workers’ Party concluded that unification with South Korea was not feasible, painting inter-Korean ties as those of hostility or combat.
Relations between North and South Korea remained strained in the past year due to North Korea’s focus on advancing its nuclear and missile programs. Kim Jong-un declared an “offensive and ultra-powerful” stance against the US in 2024, warning of decisive action in response to military confrontations with their nuclear deterrence.
Notably, North Korea had previously amended its constitution and enacted laws emphasizing the irreversible status of being a nuclear state and advocating for the exponential increase in its nuclear arsenal. At the previous party plenary meeting, Kim Jong-un labeled South Korea as an undeniable enemy and called for the rapid expansion of the country’s nuclear capabilities, including tactical nuclear weapons development.
