The National Alliance Committee of the Congress has initiated discussions regarding seat allocation in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha election within the INDIA alliance.

The meeting, currently underway in the national capital, includes committee coordinator Ashok Gehlot, along with members Bhupesh Baghel and Salman Khurshid. Uttra Pradesh Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey and Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra are participating, while Congress UP President Ajay Rai is attending virtually.

Simultaneously, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has been vocal about the potential defeat of the BJP-led NDA in the forthcoming general elections by what he terms as “Pichde Dalit Alpasankhyak” or “PDA.”

Yadav emphasized the significance of removing the BJP from Uttar Pradesh, highlighting its implications at the national level and promoting the collaborative efforts of socialist groups under the PDA banner to compete with the NDA.

Bhupesh Baghel, former Chhattisgarh chief minister and a member of the National Alliance Committee, expressed that discussions with leaders of various states will precede talks with INDIA bloc partners regarding seat-sharing possibilities.

Baghel emphasized that the high command will be briefed about these discussions, enabling further deliberations within the INDIA bloc.

The Congress recently established a five-member National Alliance Committee to facilitate discussions on state-based alliances and seat-sharing arrangements with other political parties for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The committee, led by convenor Mukul Wasnik and comprising veterans like Ashok Gehlot, Salman Khurshid, and Mohan Prakash, aims to address the complex seat-sharing issue among the alliance partners.

While the fourth meeting of the INDIA bloc touched upon concerns such as the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the suspension of Opposition MPs from Parliament during the Winter Session, discussions on seat-sharing remained unresolved. However, given recent electoral setbacks in key states, consensus on seat allocation within the INDIA alliance has gained paramount importance ahead of the upcoming general elections.
