Xi Jinping Reaffirms China’s ‘Inevitable’ Reunification Stance with Taiwan
CNN reports that Chinese leader Xi Jinping has reiterated Beijing’s longstanding claim of the “inevitable” reunification of Taiwan with China during an address marking the 130th anniversary of Mao Zedong’s birth, founder of the People’s Republic of China.
Xi emphasized that the reunification with Taiwan is a natural and desired course of action by the people.
These remarks underscore China’s claim over Taiwan, an independent and democratic island.
The timing coincides with Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election, where candidates’ stances on relations with China often reflect public sentiment toward Beijing.
Amid heightened pressure from Beijing, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, known for bolstering ties with the United States, faces challenges.
Vice President Lai Ching-te, the Democratic Progressive Party’s leading candidate, holds a favorable position in polls but lacks Chinese officials’ support.
China views Taiwan as its territory, despite never having governed it. While advocating for peaceful reunification, Chinese authorities have not ruled out the use of force.
Xi’s speech contained a veiled warning, urging peaceful cross-strait relations while cautioning against Taiwan’s separation.
The Taiwan-China issue remains sensitive in US-China relations. Xi recently stated during talks with US President Joe Biden that Taiwan’s “reunification” with China is unstoppable.
The US maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan while acknowledging China’s territorial claim. However, the US is obligated to support Taiwan’s defense by law.
The historical backdrop of Taiwan-China relations traces to 1949 when General Chiang Kai-shek retreated with his nationalist forces to Taiwan following Mao’s victory in the Chinese Civil War.
Xi’s speech also urged Chinese citizens to remember Mao’s legacy and the Communist Party’s founding mission as they pursue China’s modernization goals.
