Pakistan Police Establish ‘Special Help Centre’ Amid Reports of Missing Baloch Students
Reports of over 100 missing Baloch students due to a crackdown on their long march in Pakistan prompted the establishment of a ‘special help centre’ by the police, aiming to assist in the release of those detained, as per Dawn.
The Baloch long march, initiated on December 6 in Turbat following an alleged “extra-judicial killing,” reached the federal capital last week, highlighting the incident involving a Baloch youth and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) agents.
The Islamabad police, led by SPP Abdul Haq Umrani as the focal point, set up the centre, intending to address complaints and aid in the safe release of detained individuals. The help desk, operational round the clock, prioritizes immediate resolution of citizens’ concerns.
“The special help centre will play a pivotal role in facilitating citizens’ immediate assistance and addressing their problems based on priority criteria,” mentioned a public relations officer, as per Dawn. Additionally, the Islamabad Capital Police actively engaged in the lawful process of releasing detainees.
Senator Raza Rabbani of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) criticized the police’s handling of the situation, condemning the treatment of women and the arrest of Balochi students studying in Islamabad.
The long march, denouncing alleged Baloch genocide, illegal disappearances, and CTD’s actions, garnered significant support during stops, including a massive rally in Dera Ismail Khan.
The Balochistan Yakjehti committee urged the Baloch people to voice their concerns against atrocities, emphasizing the widespread support received by the Baloch Long March. The movement highlighted grievances over alleged Baloch genocide, forced disappearances, and encounters involving the CTD, demanding justice and an end to such actions.
