Disrupted Parliament Session Sparks Contentious Exchange Between Chairperson and Opposition Leader

Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar’s recent letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted deliberate disruptions during the Winter session of Parliament that led to the suspension of 146 MPs. Dhankhar expressed disappointment over Kharge’s refusal to interact, stating it contradicted the commitment to dialogue and discussion expressed by the latter.

Inviting Kharge for interaction, Dhankhar emphasized the need to move forward. This exchange followed Kharge’s communication to Dhankhar, expressing the Opposition’s readiness for meaningful discussions on the Parliament security breach, which they were unable to address due to lack of speaking opportunities.

Dhankhar contested Kharge’s perspective, attributing the suspensions to calculated disruptions in the House, involving sloganeering and placard raising. He detailed efforts to restore order and decried the use of disruption as a political strategy, equating it with undermining democratic values.

In response, Kharge stressed the importance of dialogue and discussion, expressing dismay over the suspension and the denial of discussion on the security breach issue. Notably, 146 MPs were suspended for demanding a statement on the Parliament security breach, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the Opposition in fostering a conducive parliamentary environment.
