Snowfall Graces Atal Tunnel as Shimla Gears Up for Tourist Rush
The Atal Tunnel in Rohtang Pass, an architectural marvel nestled in the Himalayas, welcomed fresh snowfall recently. Situated under the Rohtang Pass within the eastern Pir Panjal range, this tunnel is a testament to engineering excellence, serving as the longest single-tube highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, as per the Border Roads Organisation’s official website.
Anticipating a surge of visitors ahead of Christmas and year-end festivities, authorities in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh expressed readiness for an influx of over one lakh tourist vehicles by the last week of December. To capitalize on this anticipated influx, the Mayor of Shimla City has planned a winter carnival to allure tourists, offering a blend of festivities and an insight into Himachal Pradesh’s rich culture and traditions.
As tourists flock to the region in expectation of snow-covered landscapes, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shimla, highlighted the challenges faced in accommodating the increasing number of vehicles. He outlined plans to enhance support by deploying rescue teams, especially considering the difficulties posed by snow-covered roads during the winter.
With a marked increase in vehicles entering the city, SP Gandhi detailed arrangements to manage traffic and ensure security, including the deployment of additional personnel and forces, aiming to manage the expected surge around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
The planned week-long winter carnival, slated to commence on Christmas Day, aspires not only to boost tourism but also to advocate for eco-friendly and sustainable tourism practices. Shimla’s Mayor, Surinder Chauhan, expressed excitement over showcasing traditional folk dances and musical instruments during this inaugural event, expected to witness the participation of 500 women in a traditional folk dance.
As Himachal Pradesh prepares for an influx of tourists eager for a year-end retreat amidst snow-capped landscapes, the initiatives seek to showcase the region’s cultural richness while ensuring a memorable and sustainable experience for visitors.
