Anticipating a Tourism Surge, Shimla Prepares for Year-End Festivities
Shimla district police are bracing for an expected influx of over one lakh tourist vehicles in the final week of December ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This surge in visitors coincides with the city’s first-ever winter carnival, orchestrated by the Shimla City Mayor to draw tourists, celebrate local traditions, and showcase Himachal Pradesh’s culture.
Tourists have already begun arriving in significant numbers, eagerly anticipating snowfall in the picturesque locales as the year comes to a close.
Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shimla, stated that the police foresee numerous challenges amid the shifting seasons in Shimla.
To facilitate the influx of tourists and manage increased traffic, the police will work closely with stakeholders, especially the hospitality sector.
With the rise in tourist vehicles, particularly from the Shogi Barrier, the daily count has surged from 5,000 to 6,000 vehicles to approximately 12,000 to 13,000.
SP Gandhi expects this number to climb further to 20,000 around the Christmas and New Year period. The police have planned extensive measures, including deploying additional forces for traffic management and security, with the possibility of calling in more reinforcements if necessary.
The winter carnival, scheduled to commence on December 25, aims to revive tourism businesses in Shimla and promote eco-friendly tourism.
Surinder Chauhan, the Mayor of Shimla, expressed plans to feature traditional folk dance performances and musical displays, inaugurated by the Chief Minister.
Despite the absence of snowfall, tourists are relishing the cold weather and ambiance. Some visitors expressed their desire to experience snowfall and recommended visiting Shimla around this festive season.
While snowfall has been absent thus far, tourists like Soutirtha Biswas from West Bengal and Ankit from Bihar acknowledged Shimla’s charm as an ideal December destination, hoping for a chance to witness snowfall during their future visits.
