Omar Abdullah Expresses Disappointment but Resilience Over Supreme Court’s Article 370 Verdict
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah voiced his “disappointment” yet displayed resolve following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Article 370’s abrogation. Though “disappointed,” he emphasized that he is “not disheartened.” The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Vice President, Omar Abdullah, conveyed his readiness for an enduring struggle, stating, “It took the BJP decades to reach here. We are also prepared for the long haul.”
Key Points:
In a significant judgment, the Supreme Court upheld the Centre’s decision to nullify Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices Gavai and Surya Kant, highlighted Article 370 as a temporary provision, affirming the president’s authority to revoke it.
Opposition Reactions
Leaders from various Opposition parties expressed disappointment post-verdict. Ghulam Nabi Azad termed the ruling “sad and unfortunate,” acknowledging the dissatisfaction of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Karan Singh, senior Congress leader and son of Maharaja Hari Singh, welcomed the judgment. He urged those opposed to the abrogation to cease resistance, citing the upheld decision by the top court.
Future Direction
The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct legislative elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024. Emphasizing the importance of elections and restoration of statehood, Abdullah remarked that people should not be deprived of electoral representation.
