UN Secretary-General’s Strong Support for Security Council Reform
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emerged as a steadfast advocate for India’s inclusion in the permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), according to his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric. This endorsement comes as a significant development in India’s ongoing campaign for reforms within the UNSC to better represent the contemporary global landscape. Guterres’s support reflects the need for a more relevant and equitable Security Council.
India’s Call for Geographical and Developmental Diversity
India has been vocal about the necessity for reform at the UN Security Council, emphasizing the importance of reflecting the geographical and developmental diversity of the modern world. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, underscored the need for a Security Council that accommodates voices from developing countries and underrepresented regions, including Africa, Latin America, and the majority of Asia and the Pacific. Kamboj made these remarks during the UNSC Open Debate on Working Methods, expressing India’s concerns about enhancing the Council’s operations.
Support from BRICS and India’s Stand
India’s quest for UNSC reforms has garnered support from the BRICS nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the need for reforms at the BRICS Summit, emphasizing India’s commitment to the cause. The joint statement issued by BRICS nations called for UNSC reforms and backed the aspirations of emerging and developing countries like India, Brazil, and South Africa. The statement emphasized the urgency of making the UNSC more democratic, representative, effective, and efficient, with increased representation for developing nations.
UN Secretary-General’s Participation in G20 Summit
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to participate in the upcoming G20 Summit in Delhi, expressing his anticipation of contributing under India’s leadership. The G20’s theme, “One Family, One Planet, One Earth,” holds significant importance in a multipolar world. Guterres stressed that addressing global issues requires combatting fragmentation, and the G20 has a unique opportunity to achieve this goal. He expects substantial outcomes from the G20, which represents the world’s 20 leading economies.
India’s G20 Presidency and Geopolitical Unity
Guterres expressed confidence in India’s G20 Presidency, believing that India will make every effort to bridge geopolitical divides. India’s leadership is poised to play a crucial role in fostering unity and collaboration among G20 nations. Prime Minister Modi’s active participation in international forums, including the recent ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits in Jakarta, underscores India’s commitment to global diplomacy.
The G20 Summit, scheduled for September 9-10, will provide a platform for global leaders to address pressing global challenges and work towards a more equitable and sustainable world order.
