Cyclone Michaung Causes Havoc in South India; Nine People Dead
Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Michaung’ has wreaked significant destruction in the southern regions of India, particularly impacting the state of Tamil Nadu and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone, expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam, has already resulted in the tragic loss of mine lives and has led to widespread disruption, including the closure of multiple roads and subways due to severe waterlogging.
Devastating Impact and Fatalities
Tamil Nadu police reported various incidents leading to fatalities, including electrocution and accidents caused by falling trees and collapsing walls. The victims, identified with varied backgrounds and locations, reflect the widespread impact of the cyclone across different areas of the state. The police have also been actively involved in rescue operations, aiding families, pregnant women, children, and senior citizens trapped by the cyclone’s devastation.
Extensive Damage and Relief Efforts
In Chennai, 17 subways, including the Ganesapuram and Duraisamy Subways, have been closed due to waterlogging. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin personally inspected cyclone-affected areas and relief camps in Chennai, ensuring the well-being of those sheltered and the quality of the food being provided. The state has mobilized significant resources for rescue and relief work, including relocating 5000 workers to Chennai for mitigation efforts.
Statewide Precautions and Measures
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the cyclone’s movement and predicted its likely path and impact. As a precaution, Chennai Airfield has been closed for all arrival and departure operations. Public life in Chennai has been severely affected, with heavy rains leading to the inundation of several areas, including major roads and low-lying localities.
The state government, along with various departments and emergency services, is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the affected residents. This natural disaster underscores the challenges posed by severe weather events and the importance of preparedness and swift response to mitigate their impact.
