Jharkhand Chief Minister Challenges ED Summons, Alleges Political Targeting Supreme Court Battle Looms.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Challenges ED Summons, Alleges Political Targeting Supreme Court Battle Looms.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has taken a bold step by approaching the Supreme Court to challenge the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) summons in a high-profile money laundering case. This move comes after Mr. Soren had previously confronted the federal agency, urging it to withdraw the summons or face legal repercussions. The top court is set to hear his case tomorrow, adding a significant layer of intrigue to this unfolding drama.

    Political Maneuvering and Electoral Pressure

Hemant Soren has been summoned by the ED for questioning on September 23, and he doesn’t view this development in isolation. He alleges that the central government is using the ED as a tool to target opposition leaders who refuse to toe the government’s line. According to Mr. Soren, this targeting has intensified with the upcoming General Elections and the emergence of the opposition alliance INDIA against the ruling NDA.

    A Misuse of Power?

In his petition, Mr. Soren condemns the repeated summoning under the pretext of investigating the properties he owns, possesses, and occupies, along with the sources of their acquisition. He argues that the ED already possesses this information, as does the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He sees these summons as a deliberate ploy to harass and intimidate him at the behest of the Central Government, branding it a complete misuse of the ED’s powers.

    Prior Interactions with the ED

This isn’t the first time the central probe agency has sought Mr. Soren’s cooperation. Last month, they requested his participation eir investigation into an illegal mining case in Jharkhand’s Sahebganj district. At that time, the Chief Minister asserted that he had already provided all necessary documents and information and suggested the ED refer to the existing records.

    A Controversial Accusation

At the center of the controversy is an allegation that Hemant Soren violated election rules by granting himself a mining lease in 2021. Mr. Soren vehemently denies any wrongdoing, alleging that there is a broader conspiracy to harass a tribal leader who refuses to align with the central government’s agenda.

    Challenges and Defiance

The Chief Minister’s defiance isn’t new. In November of the previous year, he chose to skip the ED’s summons, opting instead to attend a scheduled dance festival in Chhattisgarh. He justified this decision by highlighting the short notice given by the probe agency and questioned whether he and others like him are being unjustly painted as thieves or anti-social elements.
