Indian States on Alert Amid Surge in Respiratory Illnesses in China
Following a directive from the Centre, at least five Indian states – Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu – have put their health infrastructure on alert mode. This action comes in response to a surge in respiratory illnesses among children in China. State governments are instructing hospitals and healthcare staff to ensure they are prepared to manage patients with respiratory issues.
Preventive Measures and Health Advisories
The Karnataka health department has issued an advisory to its citizens about the seasonal flu, listing symptoms, risk factors, and preventive measures like covering the mouth and nose while sneezing, frequent hand washing, and using masks in crowded places. The Rajasthan health department, while stating the situation is not currently worrisome, has emphasized vigilance and infection prevention. They have also made arrangements in paediatric and medicine departments to handle any potential cases.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
In Gujarat, the Health Minister announced the strengthening of the healthcare infrastructure created during the COVID-19 pandemic as a precautionary measure. Uttarakhand, sharing borders with China, has directed health officials to increase surveillance for respiratory illnesses. Although no child pneumonia cases have been reported in the state, officials have been asked to maintain vigilance as a precaution. The Union Health Ministry, while not considering the situation alarming, is closely monitoring it and has advised states and union territories to implement surveillance strategies for respiratory pathogens.
China’s Situation and Global Concern
The surge in respiratory illnesses in northern China, especially among children, has raised global concerns, coming four years after the emergence of COVID-19. Chinese health authorities attribute the rise in infections to known viruses and the country’s first full cold season post the lifting of strict Covid curbs. Experts currently see little indication of these cases being caused by a new virus.
