    Supreme Court Directs Resolution for Unclaimed Bodies in Manipur

    The Supreme Court on Tuesday took decisive action regarding the situation in Manipur, where numerous bodies have remained in mortuaries following ethnic clashes in May.

    The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, reviewed a report by a committee of former high court judges, including justice (retd) Gita Mittal, detailing the status of bodies in Manipur’s mortuaries.

    • Of the 175 bodies, 169 have been identified, with 81 claimed by relatives and 88 unclaimed.
    • Nine sites have been designated by the state government for burial or cremation.
    • The Supreme Court emphasized the inappropriateness of indefinitely keeping unclaimed or unidentified bodies in mortuaries.
    • Family members are allowed to perform last rites for identified and claimed bodies at any of the nine sites.
    • The state will inform relatives of identified bodies about the sites,
