PTI Urges Election Commission of Pakistan for Fair Electoral Practices Amidst Tensions
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has appealed to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure fair and equal opportunities for all political parties in the upcoming general elections, as reported by Dawn, a leading Pakistani English-language newspaper. The PTI spokesperson criticized the chief election commissioner’s recent correspondence with federal and provincial caretaker governments as insufficient, claiming that these measures did not alleviate the ongoing oppression and suppression against PTI leaders and supporters.
Demands for Concrete Actions from ECP
The PTI emphasized the need for the ECP to adopt more effective and practical measures beyond mere written communication. The party spokesperson expressed concerns over what they described as the worst constitutional and legal crises faced by Pakistan. According to the spokesperson, PTI is being restricted from conducting political activities, and there is a noticeable lack of media coverage for many of its leaders, including Imran Khan. The party also claimed that enforced disappearances are being used to coerce PTI workers into abandoning the party.
Clashes in Dir Bala District
The tensions surrounding PTI’s political activities were highlighted by recent events in the Dir Bala district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). According to ARY News, clashes broke out between PTI workers and police during a party convention in the Sahibabad area of Upper Dir district. The district administration had implemented Section 144, prohibiting large gatherings, and blocked roads to the convention site. The confrontation escalated when police attempted to disperse PTI workers at Chukiatan, leading to stone-pelting incidents and heightened tensions.
