At the ongoing exercise Mitra Shakti 23, Indian Army troops exhibited their prowess in the Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), showcasing a blend of mixed martial arts designed for effectiveness against sharp-edged and improvised weapons.
Showcasing Joint Military Expertise
The integration of Indian and Sri Lankan troops during the exercise highlights the highest standards of jointmanship and camaraderie. The display of various martial arts forms part of the broader training and interaction between the two armies.
Details of Exercise Mitra Shakti
This 12-day joint military exercise, aimed at enhancing cooperation and skills, is conducted from November 16 to 29, 2023. The Indian contingent, primarily from the Maratha Light Infantry regiment, comprises 120 personnel. The Sri Lankan contingent includes personnel from the 53 Infantry Division, with additional participation from both countries’ air forces.
Objectives and Activities of the Exercise
The primary goal of Exercise Mitra Shakti is to jointly rehearse sub-conventional operations as outlined in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. Activities include counter-terrorist operations, heliborne operations, and practices like raid, search, and destroy missions. The curriculum also encompasses AMAR, combat reflex shooting, yoga, drone usage, and counter unmanned aerial system tactics.
The exercise emphasizes achieving interoperability among troops and enhancing joint responses to various tactical scenarios. This includes securing helipads and undertaking casualty evacuation during counter-terrorist operations, aligning with the interests of UN peacekeeping operations.
Sharing Knowledge and Strengthening Ties
The exercise provides a platform for both armies to exchange views and practices, allowing participants to learn from each other’s expertise. This mutual learning and sharing of best practices are expected to bolster defence cooperation and reinforce bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka.
