In a significant development, the Defence Ministry has given the green light for the acquisition of various weapons systems and platforms, including the Dhruvastra short-range air-to-surface missile and 12 Su-30 MKI fighter jets, at an estimated cost of around Rs 45,000 crore. The decision was made during a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Industry

The approved procurements will all be made from Indian vendors under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM)/Buy (Indian) category. This move is expected to provide a substantial boost to the Indian defence industry and align with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India.

Enhancing Defence Capabilities

Several key procurements have been approved to enhance the protection, mobility, attack capabilities, and survivability of mechanized forces. These include the procurement of Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicles (LAMV) and Integrated Surveillance and Targeting System (ISAT-S). Additionally, High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) Gun Towing Vehicles have been approved to facilitate the rapid mobilization and deployment of artillery guns and radars.

Naval and Air Force Upgrades

The DAC has also approved the procurement of next-generation survey vessels for the Indian Navy. Furthermore, a proposal by the Indian Air Force for avionic upgrades to Dornier aircraft, aimed at improving accuracy and reliability for operations, has received Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), marking the initial approval.

Indigenous Precision Guided Weapon

A significant development is the clearance for the procurement of the Dhruvastra Short Range Air-to-Surface Missile, designed as a potent Indigenous Precision Guided Weapon for the indigenously built ALH Mk-IV Helicopters.

Su-30 MKI Aircraft Acquisition

The DAC has also accorded AoN for the procurement of 12 Su-30 MKI Aircraft with associated equipment from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), further bolstering India’s air capabilities.

These decisions reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities, promoting indigenous production, and ensuring the nation’s security interests.
