India’s Semiconductor Sector Attracts Global Attention: Piyush Goyal Meets Micron CEO

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, during his visit to San Francisco for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) meeting, held discussions with Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO and President of Micron Technology. Their conversation revolved around the burgeoning semiconductor sector in India and the potential business opportunities it offers.

Micron’s Foray into India’s Semiconductor Market

US-based Micron Technology is establishing India’s first chip facility in Gujarat, a significant move in India’s semiconductor industry. This project, involving an investment of USD 2.7 billion, is expected to create 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs in the coming years. The government of India had approved Micron’s initiative to set up a semiconductor test and packaging unit earlier in June.

India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem: A Hub of Opportunities

Goyal’s meeting with Mehrotra underscored India’s growing stature in the global semiconductor ecosystem. The discussions highlighted the vast opportunities available for Micron to collaborate and expand its presence in the Indian market. This move aligns with India’s broader strategy to attract major players in the semiconductor industry and bolster its manufacturing capabilities.

Engagement with YouTube CEO Neal Mohan

In addition to his meeting with Micron’s CEO, Minister Goyal also held talks with YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. Their conversation focused on India’s potential as a lucrative market for YouTube to expand its collaboration and presence.
