Transforming Governance and Empowering Citizens: India’s DPI Revolution
India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) journey has become a global success story, earning praise from the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) in a document prepared by the World Bank. The transformative impact of DPI, orchestrated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has taken center stage as India prepares to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi from September 9-10.
India’s Remarkable DPI Achievement
The World Bank document highlights India’s remarkable strides in DPI development, emphasizing that India achieved in just six years what would typically take five decades. This exceptional progress has made DPI an integral part of India’s digital ecosystem, enabling the delivery of economic opportunities and social services to all residents in a secure and efficient manner.
Over the past decade, India has built one of the world’s largest digital Government-To-Person (G2P) architectures utilizing DPI. This approach has facilitated direct transfers exceeding $361 billion to beneficiaries through 312 key schemes across 53 central government ministries. As of March 2022, these efforts have resulted in total savings amounting to $33 billion, equivalent to nearly 1.14 percent of India’s GDP.
Massive UPI Transactions Showcase DPI’s Impact
May 2023 witnessed an impressive milestone with over 9.41 billion Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions valued at approximately Rs 14.89 trillion. These figures underscore the tremendous influence of DPI, with the total value of UPI transactions for the fiscal year 2022-23 reaching nearly 50 percent of India’s nominal GDP.
India’s Commitment to Digital Transformation
The G20 summit provides an ideal platform for India to showcase its DPI success story and advocate for its global relevance. The government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to incorporating technology into governance since 2014. The ongoing effort to connect all public services to digital infrastructure reaffirms India’s dedication to digital transformation.
India’s Role as a Global Beacon
With world leaders converging on the national capital for the G20 summit, India is poised to assert its role as a global beacon in the realm of digital governance. The DPI conversation has taken center stage, drawing attention from major G20 nations and emphasizing the pivotal role technology plays in transforming governance, democracy, and the lives of Indian citizens.
Championing the Global South and the African Union’s Inclusion
In addition to its DPI advocacy, India is championing the voice of the Global South at the G20 summit. The country is actively pushing for greater representation of developing nations within the G20 process. India has also called for the African Union to be included as a permanent member, underlining its commitment to a more inclusive and equitable global platform.
Prime Minister Modi has been a vocal advocate for granting the African Union full membership in the G20. In June, he wrote to the leaders of G20 countries, urging them to endorse this proposal. During the third G20 Sherpas meeting in Hampi, Karnataka, in July, the formal inclusion of the African Union as a full member in the G20 draft communique highlighted India’s commitment to amplifying the voices of the Global South.
