Toxic Liquor Claims 19 Lives in Haryana; 7 Detained
Haryana is grappling with a tragic incident where at least 19 people have died after consuming suspected poisonous liquor. The fatalities occurred across several villages in Yamunanagar and the neighboring Ambala district, sparking fear and outrage among the local communities.
Villages Affected and Arrests Made
The villages of Mandebari, Panjeto Ka Majra, Phoosgarh, and Saran in Yamunanagar, along with areas in Ambala district, have been affected by this tragedy. In response to these events, police have arrested seven individuals, including the sons of a Congress leader and a Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader. These arrests are part of an ongoing investigation to address the illegal liquor trade in the region.
Villagers’ Fear and Opposition’s Criticism
The incident has led to a palpable sense of fear among villagers, who are hesitant to speak out against the liquor dealers due to concerns for their safety. This fear was echoed by a villager who expressed apprehension about the potential risks of raising their voice. Opposition parties have criticized the Manohar Lal Khattar government for failing to prevent such incidents, citing a lack of learning from past occurrences.
Personal Accounts and Police Response
Ravinder, whose 70-year-old father is among the victims, shared a harrowing account of his father’s death due to alcohol poisoning. The police, in response to the crisis, are conducting raids to apprehend more suspects and have seized 200 crates of counterfeit liquor from an abandoned factory in Ambala. They also found 14 empty drums and materials used for manufacturing illicit liquor.
Investigation and Special Investigation Team (SIT)
The police are investigating the manufacturing timeline and accomplices of the accused. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Yamunanagar Police to thoroughly probe the case, aiming to uncover the root causes and prevent future tragedies.
This incident underscores the serious consequences of the illegal liquor trade and highlights the need for stringent enforcement and community awareness to combat such dangerous practices.
