Strengthening Ties: India-US 2+2 Ministerial Focuses on Strategic Collaboration
United Against China’s Aggression
The India-US 2+2 ministerial dialogue, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for India, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin for the US, kicked off with a shared understanding of strategic issues, particularly countering China’s aggression. Singh emphasized the importance of the India-US partnership in maintaining a free, open, and rules-bound Indo-Pacific region, acknowledging the mutual concerns about China’s assertive actions.
Maritime Security and Indo-Pacific Stability
Highlighting the focus on maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, Singh underlined the need to safeguard vital sea lanes and promote regional stability. This aspect of the dialogue gains significance in the context of the ongoing India-China standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The two nations have been engaged in a tense standoff, with 19 rounds of talks held since 2020 to address boundary issues, underscoring the urgency of maintaining stability in the region.
Expanding Defence and Technological Collaboration
Singh further stressed the expansion of the India-US strategic partnership into new domains, including stronger defence and industrial engagement, easing technology restrictions, and establishing resilient supply chains across all domains. This expansion is aimed at enhancing the collaborative capabilities of both nations in the face of emerging geopolitical challenges and underscores the broadening scope of the India-US partnership.
Defence: A Pillar of India-US Relations
In his opening remarks, Singh highlighted defence as a crucial pillar of the India-US bilateral relationship, noting the growing convergence of strategic interests and enhanced cooperation in defence, security, and intelligence. US Secretary of Defence Austin also recognized the significant gains made in building a robust defence partnership, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing urgent global challenges. This mutual commitment signals a stronger and more integrated approach to shared security concerns and strategic objectives.
