INDIA Alliance Faces Internal Struggles in Byelections Across India.
A week after the INDIA alliance made its commitment to contest future elections “together as far as possible,” recent bypolls in Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Bengal have revealed the challenges of maintaining unity within the alliance.
Unity Tested in Kerala Bypoll.
In Kerala, the Congress successfully defended the Puthuppally seat, fending off competition from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Aam Aadmi Party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the presence of multiple INDIA members competing against each other highlighted the strain on the alliance.
Bengal’s Complex Political Landscape.
Bengal’s Dhupguri witnessed a unique scenario as the CPM and Congress joined forces against another INDIA ally, the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with the BJP. This complex political landscape raises questions about the cohesion of the INDIA alliance.
Uttarakhand’s Three-Way Contest.
Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar saw a three-way contest involving the Congress, the Samajwadi Party (allies in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghosi bypoll), and the BJP. Despite their alliance in Ghosi, the Congress and Samajwadi Party’s presence in the same race underscores the alliance’s challenges.
Mixed Results and the Road Ahead.
While the INDIA alliance managed to present a united front in four other seats, it suffered setbacks with the BJP winning two seats in Tripura (Boxanagar and Dhanpur) and leading in Bageshwar. The Ghosi bypoll, touted as a significant test for the alliance, showed the Samajwadi Party leading, and another INDIA member, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, leading in Dumri. These bypolls were triggered by the deaths of sitting MLAs and resignations, reflecting the alliance’s quest for a unified approach in future elections. These bypolls mark the first electoral tests since the INDIA bloc’s declaration to contest future elections together. However, the alliance’s choice of words has raised questions about its actual unity and its ability to challenge the BJP effectively.
