Pakistan Sanctioned for Slow Over-Rate Despite Victory Over New Zealand
Pakistan’s stunning victory over New Zealand at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was marred by a slow over-rate offense. Pakistan was found to be two overs short during New Zealand’s innings in Bengaluru, resulting in a 10% match fee penalty.
Victory Shadows Penalty
Despite Fakhar Zaman’s brilliant century securing the win, the slow over-rate tarnished Pakistan’s success in the match, jeopardizing their prospects in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
Penalty Imposed by Match Referee
The penalty was imposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees following charges raised by on-field umpires Paul Wilson and Richard Kettleborough, along with third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Joel Wilson.
Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined 5% of their match fee for each over bowled beyond the allotted time. Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, acknowledged the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Remaining in Contention
Fakhar’s unbeaten 126* in just 81 deliveries helped Pakistan stay on target using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method due to persistent rain at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The win marked Pakistan’s fourth victory of the tournament, keeping them in the running for a top-four finish in the group stage if they can defeat England in their final match.
