Tenure of PCB Chairman Extended until end of ongoing Wc2023
Amidst controversy and criticism surrounding his tenure, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Zaka Ashraf’s term, which was set to conclude, has been extended until the end of the ongoing World Cup, as confirmed by Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar in a recent television interview.
Ashraf’s Controversial Tenure
Zaka Ashraf’s leadership of the PCB has been marked by scrutiny and criticism, and his tenure was originally scheduled to end on November 5. However, the extension comes at a crucial juncture in Pakistan’s cricket management, with chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq having resigned from his post due to the team’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup.
Accusations of “flagrant misdoings and unconstitutional decisions” against Ashraf had also surfaced, further fueling the controversy. The leaked chat of Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, with a senior PCB official added to the turmoil.
In the Midst of World Cup, No Major Decisions
Interim Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar stated, “At this time, you know there is a tournament going on. We’ll look after this tournament, what needs doing, what doesn’t need doing. At this moment, I don’t think we are going to make a big decision. The reason for that is that at times you have to work according to the doctrine of necessity. Once we are past the World Cup, then we’ll see.”
Kakar’s comments followed a meeting between him and former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi in Lahore, where Afridi had publicly criticized Ashraf earlier in the week.
The PCB released a statement after the meeting, noting that Shahid Afridi expressed an interest in working with younger cricketers to groom them into future stars and shape them into well-rounded representatives of Pakistan cricket. The statement also acknowledged Afridi’s appreciation for Zaka Ashraf’s contributions to Pakistan cricket.
The extension of Zaka Ashraf’s tenure raises questions about the future of Pakistan cricket administration and the potential for reforms and changes in the coming months.
