Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman May Visit India in November-December Amid Ganga Treaty Talks

NEW DELHI, October 24, 2026 [VoM News]: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may visit India in late November or early December as the two countries hold discussions on renewing the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, which is due to expire on December 12, according to media reports.

No official announcement has been made regarding the proposed visit. Its timing may depend on the progress of negotiations, with Bangladesh reportedly keen to present a successful renewal of the agreement as a diplomatic achievement of Rahman’s government.

Earlier this month, Bangladesh Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee expressed hope that a new agreement would be signed before the existing treaty expires. He said restoring a guarantee clause similar to the one included in the 1977 agreement was among Bangladesh’s priorities.

Signed on December 12, 1996, by then Indian Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the 30-year treaty governs the sharing of Ganges waters at the Farakka Barrage in West Bengal during the lean season from January 1 to May 31.

India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has said the invitation to Rahman remains valid and there is no need to rush the visit.

Meanwhile, Rahman is scheduled to visit Japan from October 26 to 29 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Talks are planned for October 27 in Tokyo, with both countries expected to sign several memorandums of understanding covering trade, agriculture, skills development, aviation and other areas of cooperation.
