Trump Spoke With Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Before Tehran Visit: Report

Washington, August 25, 2026: US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir last week and discussed Iran ahead of Munir’s visit to Tehran, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the conversation.

Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States.

Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that Munir met with Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Rezaei reportedly said the United States must change its approach and take practical steps to implement the terms of a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU was signed in June as part of efforts to end hostilities in West Asia and establish channels for technical discussions, including issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.

Earlier on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also met Munir in Tehran. According to a statement shared by Ghalibaf on Telegram, the two discussed what Iran described as repeated US breaches of commitments under the 14-point agreement.

“The commitments of the parties in the Memorandum of Understanding are clear,” Ghalibaf said, according to the statement, arguing that US actions had prevented greater regional stability and contributed to mistrust.

Ghalibaf said Tehran remained committed to implementing the MoU and insisted that Washington must honour its commitments.

During the meeting, Munir reportedly said he would continue efforts aimed at restoring stability in the region.

The reported phone conversation between Trump and Munir came shortly before the Pakistani army chief’s Tehran visit, placing the discussions against the backdrop of continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate regional dialogue.
