Train derails in southern England, killing 11 people, with three coaches overturning: British Transport Police
London, August 14, 2026 [VoM News]: Eleven people were killed Thursday when a passenger train derailed in southern England, with three cars overturning on the outskirts of the town of Lewes, British Transport Police said.
The Southern Rail service, departing from London Victoria Station and headed to Eastbourne, was carrying about 150 passengers as it skidded off the rails outside the tourist town of Lewes.
Police said the two most critically injured passengers had serious, life-threatening injuries, nine others had minor injuries and that 11 people were injured in total. All of the passengers had been safely evacuated from the train within roughly 3 hours.
Passenger Rob Bradley was traveling on the train with his six-year-old daughter, he reported to BBC: As the train began to gather speed and rock, his train car suddenly flew upward before the emergency brakes slammed on.
“Anything loose, my laptop, my airpods, my belongings,” he said; claiming to have see the rear of the train ripped open with smoke and dust swirling around him as they traveled onward before eventually coming to a stop sliding for a great distance.
“There were people covered in blood, one man was cut up on his head, his clothing all cut up, a man in the next compartment had glass in his forehead. One of the rear cars had overturned and slid down the embankment into a field. Luckily, my daughter and I were uninjured as well as most others. But one guy told me he had been injured by shattered glass”.
Firefighters, ambulance personnel and rescue workers were seen treating victims at a field bordering the tracks in aerial footage. Three helicopters, along with several ambulances, were employed at the scene.
The cause of the derailment has yet to be reported by British Transport Police. It has not yet been determined if any of the factors such as tracks, or mechanical equipment could have been responsible.
