Taiwan reported on Wednesday that China had dispatched 43 military aircraft and seven ships in the vicinity of the self-ruled island. This development underscores China’s unwavering commitment to its campaign of harassment, threats, and intimidation toward Taiwan. The situation, according to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, reflects the activities over the 24-hour period leading up to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Shockingly, 37 of these military aircraft had crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait, a line that China has chosen to disregard as an informal boundary between the two sides. Taiwan’s response was swift and decisive, as they monitored the situation, scrambled jet fighters, dispatched ships, and activated land-based missile systems—a standard reaction to Chinese military provocations.

This continuous series of aggressive Chinese maneuvers began in the wake of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August 2022. China, infuriated by the visit, suspended military communication with the U.S. as an expression of its discontent. Beijing views Taiwan as its own territory, to be brought under its control by force if deemed necessary. These persistent military activities by China appear to be aimed at eroding Taiwanese morale, straining the resources of its pilots and military personnel, and causing wear and tear on its equipment. Nevertheless, Taiwan’s de facto independence remains widely favored by the island’s residents, leading to an increase in the defense budget for acquiring new equipment, both from its primary ally, the U.S., and from domestic production.

China Reiterates Unyielding Stance on Taiwan at Defense Forum

During an international defense forum in Beijing, China’s second-ranking military official, Gen. Zhang Youxia, reiterated the Chinese government’s unwavering commitment to thwart any attempts at formal Taiwanese independence. He declared that China, along with its military, would never tolerate any actions that seek to separate Taiwan from China in any form. The event, which lasted for three days, was intended to showcase regional leadership and strengthen military cooperation, drawing attendees from numerous countries.

Despite ongoing tensions with the U.S., Japan, Southeast Asian neighbors, and India, the forum demonstrated China’s resolve to maintain its position on Taiwan. Notably, the United States was represented at the event, indicating a potential resumption of military dialogue between Washington and Beijing. Cynthia Carras, the Defense Department’s leading China expert, led the U.S. delegation at the forum, although no formal meetings with Chinese officials or media interactions were reported.
