Security Scare Unfolds at G20 Summit: Chinese Delegation Faces Baggage Dilemma.
New Delhi: Last Thursday, during the G20 summit in Delhi, a 12-hour drama unfolded at the Taj Palace Hotel, where the Chinese delegation had checked in. Security personnel at the five-star hotel noticed a delegate carrying a bag with “unusual dimensions.” This seemingly innocuous incident set off a series of events that kept everyone on edge.
Diplomatic Protocols and Unusual Bag Dimensions
The security team, aware of diplomatic protocols, decided to allow the bags into the hotel. However, their initial decision led to an unforeseen series of events when, later in one of the rooms occupied by the Chinese delegation, a hotel employee spotted “suspicious equipment” inside two of these unusual bags.
Standoff Over Baggage Inspection
The situation escalated when the hotel’s security department was informed about the suspicious contents. They promptly requested the delegation members to pass their bags through a scanner for inspection. Surprisingly, the Chinese officials resisted this request, resulting in a tense standoff. Sources indicate that the Chinese officials’ denial further exacerbated the situation.
Resolution Amidst Tensions
After nearly 12 hours of uncertainty and negotiations, a resolution was finally reached. The Chinese delegation agreed to send their bags to the embassy for further inspection. During this extended standoff, the security team vigilantly guarded the hotel room, ensuring the safety and security of all involved.
Diplomatic Success Amidst Challenges
The G20 summit, held in the national capital over the weekend of September 9 and 10, witnessed significant diplomatic achievements. India, as the host country, achieved a remarkable diplomatic victory by securing a “100% consensus” on the ‘New Delhi Declaration.’ This consensus was achieved despite major differences related to the Russia-Ukraine war. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping was absent from the summit, with Premier Li Qiang leading the Chinese delegation.
