Late on Saturday night, Indonesia’s Irian Jaya experienced a tremor measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology. The seismic activity occurred at 22:46:28 IST at a depth of 77 km. The quake’s epicenter was located at Latitude: -3.11 and Longitude: 139.28.

The NCS shared details via social media, posting, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.2, Occurred on 30-12-2023, 22:46:28 IST, Lat: -3.11 & Long: 139.28, Depth: 77 km, Location: Irian Jaya, Indonesia.”

Irian Jaya, previously known as West Irian and West Papua, was the region affected by the seismic activity. As of now, no reports of casualties or significant damage have emerged. Further information is anticipated as authorities continue to assess the situation.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” a path along the Pacific Ocean known for active volcanoes and frequent seismic events. This horseshoe-shaped belt spans around 40,000 km and contains a significant majority of the world’s volcanoes and earthquakes, representing a geological hotspot.
