597 Railway Stations in India Equipped with Lifts or Escalators for Accessibility
The Union Ministry of Railways announced that 597 railway stations in India are now equipped with either lifts or escalators, supporting easy movement for the elderly, sick, and differently-abled individuals. This initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Sugamya Bharat Mission’ (Accessible India Campaign), aiming to enhance accessibility in railway stations and trains. The installation of lifts and escalators facilitates smooth passenger movement between platforms, contributing to improved safety. Out of 1,287 escalators, 1,144 have been installed between April 2014 and 2023, with 128 installed in 2023. Additionally, 1,292 lifts have been installed at 497 stations, with 227 installed in 2023.
