However, it was her 1993 short story collection, A River Sutra, that catapulted her to international acclaim, even before the term “Indo-Anglian literature” gained prominence.

In 2019, Gita Mehta was honored with India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, by the BJP government, recognizing her exceptional contributions to literature and education. However, she chose to “politely decline” the prestigious award, citing concerns about its timing during an election year. Her decision was rooted in her desire to avoid any misconstrual of nepotism and to spare her brother, the Chief Minister, from potential embarrassment.
