10 Dead, 25 Injured In School Shooting In Canada’s British Columbia

Tumbler Ridge (British Columbia): Ten people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and at least 25 others injured in a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on Wednesday, police said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the suspect — earlier described in an alert as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress — was found dead inside the school with what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted injury.

Casualties And Emergency Response

According to police, six people were found dead at the school. One victim died en route to hospital, while two others were discovered dead at a residence in the community. Two individuals were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries.

An alert was issued around 2 pm local time, shortly after reports of gunfire at approximately 1.20 pm. Residents of the town of about 2,400 people were instructed to shelter in place, lock their doors and remain indoors. The order was lifted roughly five hours later.

RCMP North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd said around 100 people, including students and staff, were safely evacuated from the school. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether a second suspect may have been involved and are working to confirm the total number of victims.

Additional police resources from neighbouring communities have been deployed, and the school will remain closed for the rest of the week.

Community In Shock

A Grade 9 student told local media that he hid in a classroom closet with other students during the shooting.

“We have multiple layers of support coming for our students, for our teachers, for our community of Tumbler Ridge,” Floyd said, adding that investigators are still trying to determine the motive.

The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having approximately 175 students from Grades 7 to 12.

Leaders React

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the shooting.

“My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence,” he said in a statement on social media, thanking first responders for their courage.

British Columbia Premier David Eby also expressed condolences, assuring the community of full government support. “Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones,” he said.

Larry Neufeld, MLA for Peace River South, described the incident as “tragic and deeply disturbing” and said additional RCMP and ambulance resources had been sent to the area.

Context

The shooting marks Canada’s deadliest mass casualty incident since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that claimed nine more lives.

In recent years, Canada has introduced stricter gun control measures, including an expanded ban on firearms classified as assault weapons, in response to previous mass shootings.

The investigation into Wednesday’s attack remains ongoing.
