Wreckage of Missing IAF An-32 Aircraft Found Seven Years Later

In a significant breakthrough, the wreckage of the Indian Air Force (IAF) An-32 aircraft, which mysteriously disappeared over the Bay of Bengal in 2016, has been located. Resting at a depth of approximately 3.4 km, around 310 km off the Chennai coast, the discovery was made using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) by the National Institute of Ocean Technology. The images analyzed align with the structure of the An-32, confirming the presence of the missing aircraft.

Unraveling a Seven-Year Mystery
On July 22, 2016, the IAF An-32 aircraft, carrying 29 personnel, vanished over the Bay of Bengal, sparking one of India’s most extensive search operations. The lack of essential locating equipment on the aircraft posed challenges. The recent discovery of the wreckage by an AUV marks the end of a seven-year-long mystery, providing closure to the families of the personnel onboard.

Advanced Technology and Crucial Role of AUV
Utilizing advanced technology such as multi-beam SONAR and synthetic aperture SONAR, the search operation successfully pinpointed the wreckage on the seabed. The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle played a crucial role in this discovery, showcasing the efficacy of modern technology in solving complex cases.

End of a Long Search Operation
Despite the search operation officially concluding in 2016, the quest for answers persisted. The discovery of the An-32 wreckage brings an end to the prolonged search, offering closure to the families of the 29 individuals lost in the mysterious disappearance.
