WhatsApp Developing Voice Note Transcription Feature for Android
WhatsApp is in the process of developing a feature for Android devices that transcribes voice notes. This feature, utilizing speech recognition technology, will locally process voice messages, displaying the transcribed text directly within the chat window. This innovation aims to enhance accessibility for users, particularly those with hearing impairments, and provide convenience in situations where listening to voice messages is impractical.
Insights from Feature Tracker WABetaInfo
WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, uncovered this upcoming capability within WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.8. Although still under development, the feature promises significant utility once released. The platform has provided an illustration of the feature’s potential appearance, offering users insight into its functionality.
On-Device Speech Recognition for Privacy
The transcribing process will rely on on-device speech recognition, ensuring user privacy and maintaining the platform’s end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp will notify users of the need to download approximately 150MB of additional data to enable voice note transcription. This approach suggests that even without internet connectivity, previously downloaded voice notes can still be transcribed.
Continued Evolution and Language Support
WhatsApp’s exploration of this feature began in May 2023 with the rollout of version 23.9.0.70 for WhatsApp beta on iOS. Additionally, language packs are downloaded onto users’ devices to support transcription in various languages. iOS users can also search through these transcripts, which are indexed similarly to regular messages, providing a seamless experience within the app.
