V R Lalithambika Awarded France’s Highest Civilian Honor
V R Lalithambika, a distinguished scientist and former Director of the Directorate of Human Spaceflight Programme at ISRO, has been awarded the prestigious Légion d’Honneur by France. This top civilian honor recognizes her significant contributions to space cooperation between France and India. The French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou, presented the award on behalf of the French government.
Lalithambika’s Role in Indo-French Space Collaboration
Lalithambika’s expertise in advanced launch vehicle technology, particularly with ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), has been pivotal in fostering collaboration between the Indian and French space agencies. In 2018, as the Director of the Human Spaceflight Programme, she played a key role in the Gaganyaan project, working closely with the French National Space Agency (CNES). This partnership led to the signing of the first joint agreement for cooperation on human spaceflight, facilitating the exchange of specialists in space medicine.
Further Developments in Space Collaboration
Lalithambika’s efforts continued in 2021 when she coordinated with CNES for a second agreement focused on India’s astronaut program. This agreement enabled training for India’s flight physicians and mission control teams in France, enhancing their capabilities in space operations and microgravity applications.
Recognition and Future Inspirations
French Ambassador Mathou lauded Lalithambika as a trailblazer in space technology, whose tireless efforts have significantly advanced the Indo-French space partnership. In response to receiving the Légion d’Honneur, Lalithambika expressed her hope that this honor would encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields and excel in their areas of expertise.
