US Will Maintain Support for Taiwan: Former Ambassador

According to Nikkei Asia, James Gilmore, former US ambassador to the OSCE, reassured that the US will stand by Taiwan against China, regardless of the US presidential election outcome. Amid global debates over potential isolationism under Trump’s “America First” slogan, Gilmore debunked notions of US unreliability, terming them deliberate lies propagated by adversaries.
Speaking at a forum in Taipei, Gilmore reiterated Washington’s unwavering commitment to Taiwan, suggesting increased support under a potential second Trump presidency. He attributed tensions in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea to President Xi’s aggression, criticizing China’s belligerence.
Despite maintaining the “One China” policy since 1979, acknowledging Beijing’s position while refraining from endorsing Taiwanese independence, Gilmore emphasized the need for strong alliances to counter hybrid warfare. He clarified that “America First” does not equate to isolationism and reiterated Washington’s willingness to collaborate with friendly and strong allies.
