- President Lai’s statements during his inauguration were cited as a trigger for the exercises.
Following China’s Joint Sword-2024A military exercise around Taiwan, US experts have analyzed Beijing’s intent to make such large-scale drills a regular occurrence. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington highlighted China’s strategy, suggesting that the China Coast Guard (CCG) could play a more significant role in enforcing blockades.
The two-day military exercise, launched shortly after President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration, marked the third round of large-scale drills China has conducted around Taiwan in recent years. According to experts Bonny Lin and Brian Hart, China’s military activities around Taiwan serve to signal displeasure and punish both Taiwan and the United States.
The experts noted that China’s latest exercise came in response to statements made by President Lai during his inauguration speech, which emphasized Taiwan’s sovereignty. The exercise, named Joint Sword-2024A, showcased China’s readiness to utilize both military and coast guard forces to assert its stance on Taiwan-related issues.
Lin and Hart emphasized that such exercises are likely to continue as China seeks to demonstrate its displeasure and attract international attention. The analysis underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and China’s assertive posture towards Taiwan’s sovereignty.
