US Bolsters Defence Cooperation with India in Indo-Pacific for Regional Stability
The United States has intensified its commitment to fortify India’s defence capabilities and uphold deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The US Department of Defense labeled 2023 as a ‘decisive year,’ emphasizing its support for allies’ and partners’ security investments.
The official release from the US Department of Defense highlighted efforts to reinforce India’s defence modernization plans, particularly through the US-India Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap.
The cooperation aims to co-produce fighter jet engines, Stryker armored vehicles, and promote collaboration between US and Indian researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors through the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X).
The Defence Department underscored the significance of joint military exercises, including India’s integration of advanced fighter aircraft and strategic bombers, stressing enhanced interoperability for stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Exercise MALABAR was highlighted, where the US, India, Japan, and Australia engaged in anti-submarine exercises, communications, and air defense training.
Moreover, the US outlined its involvement in ASEAN initiatives, including capacity-building programs and training courses to integrate Women, Peace, and Security principles into regional security planning.
A substantial investment exceeding USD 1.2 billion was highlighted, targeting security cooperation and maritime domain awareness across the Indo-Pacific.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the pivotal role of 2023 in executing US defence strategy in Asia, echoing the commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue reiterated the commitment to strengthen defence collaboration, showcasing comprehensive dialogues, advanced military exercises, and joint projects under the Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap.
The dialogue applauded the progress of the INDUS-X initiative and highlighted investor strategy sessions that mobilize capital for innovative security technologies.
Additionally, the launch of INDUS-X Gurukul Education series and joint challenges initiative signifies efforts to leverage startup potential in both countries’ defence ecosystems.
The India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, a diplomatic summit held annually since 2018, reaffirmed the shared commitment to advancing defence cooperation and fostering innovation, marking a significant step towards bolstering bilateral defence relations.
