Unveiling Common Motives for Murders in India: Insights from Data
India witnessed a total of 28,522 murder cases in 2022, averaging 78 killings daily, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). This figure represents a slight decrease from the 29,272 cases in 2021 and 29,193 in 2020. The report titled “Crime in India-2022” sheds light on these statistics.
Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of murder cases with 3,491 incidents, followed by Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and West Bengal. On the other end of the spectrum, states like Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram, Goa, and Manipur recorded the lowest numbers. Among Union Territories, Delhi reported the highest number of murders, followed by Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and others. Notably, Lakshadweep reported zero murder cases.
The demographic analysis showed that 95.4% of murder victims were adults, with men constituting about 70% of the total victims, 8,125 being female, and nine belonging to the third gender. The predominant motive behind these murders was ‘disputes’, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh leading in this category. ‘Personal vendetta or enmity’ was the second most common motive. Other motives included dowry, witchcraft, child/human sacrifice, communal/religious reasons, casteism, political reasons, class conflict, honour killing, and love affairs. Family disputes, illicit relationships, extremism/insurgency, robberies, gang rivalry, property/land disputes, and petty quarrels also contributed to the murder cases in 2022.
