Key Highlights:
- Two bodies recovered, including a 12-year-old boy, after a cloudburst in Ramban.
- Five people, including women and children, remain missing as rescue efforts face delays due to continuous rain.
- Flash floods caused significant damage to local infrastructure, including schools and vehicles.
Rescue operations continued in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Tuesday after a devastating cloudburst struck the region. The disaster, which occurred in the Panchayats of Kumate, Dhraman, and Halla in Rajgarh tehsil on Monday afternoon, triggered flash floods in the Tanger and Dadi streams, leading to the disappearance of several people.
Tehsildar Rajgarh, Major Singh, reported that seven people from three different families were swept away by the flash floods.
Despite challenging weather conditions, rescue teams have managed to recover the bodies of two individuals: Yasir Ahmad, a 20-year-old from Gadgram, and 12-year-old Khalid Ahmed Parihar from Suli-Kumate.
The search continues for the five remaining missing persons. Among those still unaccounted for are Ahmad’s mother, Naseema Begum (42), and his six-year-old sister, Shazia Banoo.
Additionally, Parihar’s mother, Gulshan Begum (42), and his eight-year-old sister, Seerat Banoo, remain missing. Another six-year-old girl, Qazia Banoo, from Dungar Dandllah, is also yet to be found.
The rescue operation, involving personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and volunteers, has been hampered by continuous rain.
The swollen rivulets and difficult terrain have significantly slowed progress, with rescuers needing nearly three hours to reach the affected villages on foot.
In addition to the human toll, the flash floods have caused considerable damage to local infrastructure.
Two government schools in Gadgram and Sonsua suffered structural damage, and three parked private vehicles were washed away by the floods. The situation remains dire as the search for the missing continues.
