Tuticorin Airport Renamed Thoothukudi Airport; Madurai Airport Declared International Airport

Tuticorin Airport Renamed Thoothukudi Airport; Madurai Airport Declared International Airport

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Friday announced the renaming of Tuticorin Airport as Thoothukudi Airport in Tamil Nadu, describing the move as a step toward correcting colonial-era naming and restoring cultural identity.

Speaking to reporters, the minister called the development a historic moment and said the change reflects the vision of Narendra Modi to remove colonial imprints and promote India’s cultural heritage and languages.

“Today is a historic day for Tuticorin Airport, where we have officially changed the name in all languages. This reflects our nation’s resolve to correct what was once a colonial imprint and re-establish the strength of our culture, heritage and languages,” Naidu said.

He also praised the rich legacy of Tamil culture and language, calling Tamil language one of the oldest languages in the world. Naidu said protecting and promoting Tamil heritage is a collective responsibility for the nation.

During his visit to Madurai, the minister also announced that Madurai Airport has officially been granted international airport status. The decision follows approval by the Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The elevation of Madurai Airport to international status is expected to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and support economic growth in southern Tamil Nadu. Officials said the upgrade could also attract international pilgrims and businesses due to the city’s historic and cultural significance.

While in Madurai, Naidu also visited the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, describing the temple as a symbol of pride not only for Tamil Nadu but for the entire country.

Authorities believe the new international status for the airport will strengthen tourism, improve global connectivity, and accelerate development across the region.
