
Trump Ultimatum to Hamas: Accept Gaza Peace Plan by Sunday or Face ‘All Hell’
SRINAGAR: US President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the armed group accept a Washington-backed peace plan for Gaza by Sunday evening or face severe military consequences.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform on Friday, as per Reuters, Trump set a deadline of 18:00 Washington time (22:00 GMT) on Sunday for an agreement to be reached. The proposal calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release within 72 hours of 20 living Israeli hostages, along with the remains of others believed dead, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinians detained in Israel.
Arab and Turkish mediators are understood to be pressing Hamas to respond positively. However, a senior Hamas official has indicated the group is likely to reject the plan. According to the BBC, the head of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza has already signalled opposition to the proposal, while some of the organisation’s political leaders in Qatar are reportedly open to adjustments but lack influence over hostage decisions.
Trump warned of catastrophic consequences if the deal is refused, writing: “If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.”

The plan requires Hamas to release all hostages within the first three days of the ceasefire, a key sticking point as the hostages are considered the group’s main bargaining tool. Around 48 hostages are thought to remain in Gaza, with only 20 believed to be alive.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage. Since then, at least 66,288 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
