Triple-Layered Security Implemented at 600 Polling Stations in Maoist-Affected Bastar for Tomorrow’s Election
In the lead-up to the Chhattisgarh assembly elections, a significant security operation is underway in the Bastar division, recognized for its Naxalite presence. The first phase of voting scheduled for November 7 will see over 600 polling booths enveloped in a stringent three-layer security blanket. This extensive security deployment involves around 60,000 personnel, split between the Central Armed Police Forces and the state police. High-risk areas will benefit from the expertise of specialized anti-Naxal units like CoBRA, as well as dedicated women commando teams, ensuring the polls proceed without incident.
Polling Stations Relocated Amidst Security Concerns
The specter of Naxal violence has necessitated the relocation of 149 polling stations across five assembly constituencies to safer locales, such as nearby police stations and security camps. These adjustments come amid advanced measures to monitor Naxal activities, with drones and helicopters providing aerial surveillance and bomb disposal squads, along with canine units, on standby. The election, determining the composition of the 90-member state assembly, will be conducted in two phases, with special attention to the twelve seats within the Bastar division during the initial phase. Voting times vary, with most booths opening from 7 am to 3 pm, and the remaining three constituencies from 8 am to 5 pm.
Voting Amidst Challenges: A Call to Democracy
Despite the challenges posed by the Maoist insurgents, who continue to disrupt the electoral process with acts of violence, such as the recent assassination of a BJP leader, the authorities remain resolute. The Inspector General of Police for the Bastar Range, Sundarraj P., has issued a call to the electorate to participate in large numbers, reaffirming that the comprehensive security arrangements are in place for the peaceful conduct of elections. The efforts underscore a determined push against the anti-democratic tactics of the Maoists, seeking to affirm the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a region striving for peace and progress.
