Tragedy Strikes Eastern Libya as Storm Daniel Unleashes Devastating Floods. Image/ NDTV
Eastern Libya is reeling from a catastrophic disaster, with at least 150 lives lost as unprecedented floods swept through the region. This catastrophe unfolded as “Storm Daniel” wreaked havoc across the Mediterranean, with its torrential rains causing widespread destruction in Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece. Shocking images and videos captured by residents in the affected areas of Libya depict massive mudslides, collapsed buildings, and entire neighborhoods submerged under muddy waters.
The Toll of Devastation
Mohamed Massoud, a spokesperson for the Benghazi-based administration in Libya, grimly reported, “At least 150 people were killed as a result of flooding and torrential rains left by storm Daniel in Derna, Jabal al-Akhdar region, and the suburbs of Al-Marj.” The calamity has also resulted in extensive material damage to both public and private properties, compounding the tragedy further.
A Race Against Time: Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue efforts are underway to save hundreds of residents who remain trapped in challenging-to-reach areas. The army is actively supporting these operations. Tragically, during rescue missions, East Libyan authorities lost contact with nine soldiers, adding to the urgency of the situation. The prime minister of the east-based government, Oussama Hamad, along with a rescue committee and other ministers, rushed to Derna to assess the extent of the damage.
Official Declarations and Mourning
In response to the catastrophe, Hamad’s government declared Derna a “disaster area.” Meanwhile, Libya’s western government, led by Abdelhamid Dbeibah, announced three days of national mourning during an extraordinary ministerial meeting broadcast live on television. The call for “the unity of all Libyans” in the face of this disaster resonates as the nation grapples with the devastation.
Economic Impact: Energy Sector Disruption
The National Petroleum Company, which operates primarily in eastern Libya, declared “a state of maximum alert” and suspended flights between production sites due to significantly reduced activity. This disruption in the energy sector highlights the far-reaching consequences of this natural disaster.
Global Response and Assistance
The United Nations mission in Libya expressed condolences for the lives lost and pledged to provide urgent humanitarian assistance. They are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to support local authorities in their efforts to address the emergency.
Challenges Ahead
As the world continues to grapple with climate change, extreme weather events like Storm Daniel become increasingly common. The atmosphere’s increased water vapor content, coupled with factors like urbanization and land-use planning, contribute to more intense rainfall and the risk of flooding in various parts of the world.
The tragedy in eastern Libya serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for coordinated efforts to mitigate the impact of such disasters and address the broader challenges posed by climate change on a global scale. In the face of adversity, communities and nations must unite to provide relief and support to those affected by such calamities.
