Delhi : The NDRF concluded a seven-hour rescue operation at a coaching center in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, where three civil services aspirants died after the building’s basement flooded during heavy rains.
The victims, two female students and one male student, were trapped in the basement, which housed a library. Their bodies were recovered by the NDRF, local police, and fire department.
Protests erupted outside the coaching center as students demanded accountability. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan confirmed the end of the NDRF’s search operation and stated that CCTV footage is being reviewed to understand the sequence of events.
The Delhi Fire Department received a distress call from Rau’s IAS Study Circle at around 7 pm on Saturday, indicating severe waterlogging and potential entrapment. Five fire tenders were dispatched, finding the basement fully submerged upon arrival.
Revenue Minister Atishi ordered an inquiry, demanding a report within 24 hours to determine responsibility. She assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj criticized the AAP administration, alleging negligence and ignoring repeated appeals to clean local drains. They demanded resignations from Jal Board Minister Atishi and local MLA Durgesh Pathak.
Officials revealed that rapid flooding of the basement trapped several students, necessitating the use of ropes for evacuation. The floating furniture further complicated rescue efforts.
This tragic incident follows the recent electrocution of a 26-year-old civil services aspirant in central Delhi’s Patel Nagar area after heavy rains.
